File sharing is no longer a cumbersome and tedious activity as compared to the early days. Gone are the days when people had to exchange wads of floppies and Cd’s to exchange files. The e mail provided an alternate solution with restrictions on space. Internet users needed something that was available as a platform for sharing files. Napster was one of the first to get into the act allowing internet users to share files over the internet. They were mainly limited to the sharing of MP3 files. File sharing programs have since then taken a whole new view about the aspect of sharing.
File sharing programs have their own characteristics and may require certain programs that are interactive with the file that needs to be shared. File sharing requires users to download programs and install them into the hard disk of their computers. The programs may differ according to the type of requirement the user may have. Some of the programs are available free of charge and others may offer a trial period before charging the users for the program. Some of these programs offer only file sharing capabilities. Others have added attractions such as chat and search facilities as well. Most developers of such programs have web sites that users can visit and choose the program that suits them best. While access to some if free, others may require registration before access is allowed.
It must be noted that file sharing programs are also carriers of viruses that can penetrate even the best anti virus programs. These are viruses that have been developed by the best hackers and can be difficult to detect and clean out. They look innocent but have the capability to attach themselves to the address book of the user and multiply.
